HISTORIC STRATHALBYN
Settled in 1839 by Scottish immigrants, the town became an important
trading centre for the surrounding farmers. The Railway Station was always
busy with goods and passenger trains: as the approximate half-way stop to
Victor Harbor and the coast.
Prior to European settlement the area around Strathalbyn was part of
the larger Ngarrindjeri Aboriginal world.
The town, for a while called Strath Albyn comes from two Gaelic words - 'strath'
meaning 'broad valley' and 'Albion' meaning 'hilly land'
THE GASWORKS
In December 1869 the
Provincial Gas Company opened its Strathalbyn Gasworks, providing gas
lighting to the provincial town. The Gasworks was the "Smallest
operational gasworks in the world" with the supply of gas maintained until
1918.
The original buildings have
been painstakingly restored and renovated and will breathe new life into
this historic landmark.
